So what is Buddy?

Buddy is a small desktop app with an AI assistant inside. You type (or talk) in plain English, and it doesn't just answer — it can open apps, read and reply to your iMessages, work with Gmail, Notion, GitHub and more, and keep going until the job is done.

It's homemade, built by one Hack Club teenager for regular people instead of big companies. It's an active beta: not perfect, but it's improving every week and every release is public on GitHub.

"Find a cake recipe, draft an email to my mom with the link, and open Gmail."

A manager plans

Simple chat is answered right away. Bigger requests go to a manager that splits the job into easy, medium and hard steps.

Workers do it

The right model and tools handle each step, so cheap work stays cheap.

You see everything

Open "show your thinking" to see the plan and every action Buddy took.

What's inside

Chat

Private by default. Chats, settings and memory live in a local database on your computer.
You stay in control. Anything that deletes data or makes big changes asks first, and each plugin has its own permissions.
Pick your model. Choose a model and a thinking level (Low to Max) right from the chat box.
Make it yours. Dark mode and soft colour themes, including a Hack Club Red gradient.

Downloads are pulled live from GitHub Releases, so this page always shows the newest build. Unsigned apps may show a security prompt: on Mac, approve Buddy in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Get started in 3 minutes

Install Buddy from the download above. On Mac, drag it into Applications.
Get a free key at ai.hackclub.com (Hack Club members) — or use any OpenRouter key.
Paste it in Buddy → Plans → Hacky Buddy, then ask "What can you do?"

AI can make mistakes — review important answers, and never paste passwords or API keys into a chat.
